MORRISSEY IN STORM OVER OLD HEADMASTER by Neal Snowdon

"Rock star Morrissey sparked more controversy when he returned to Manchester by telling fans he was glad his former headmaster was dead.

The Mancunian singer and former frontman for The Smiths caused outrage in the United States last month by saying that he wished George Bush had died instead of Ronald Reagan

Last night, he used his headlining slot at Manchester's Move Festival to vent his rage at his old school, St Mary's Secondary Modern in Stretford, and its late headmaster Vincent Moss.

The singer attacked St Mary's just before playing "The Headmasters Ritual", a song off The Smiths second album "Meat is Murder, with lines including "Belligerent ghouls run Manchester schools"

Last night he referred to "a horrendous mausoleum called St Marys" and its dead headmaster.

St Marys is no longer in existence. But the memories clearly remain with Morrissey, even though he left almost 30 years ago."

  • He's often said controversial and sometimes tasteless stuff at live shows in the past and few people other than those in attendance would get to hear. Now he shoots his mouth off and within minutes thousands of people find out exactly what he says thanks to the internet.

  • I found it amusing as did everyone else, in fact it got a huge cheer. If he was victimised, bullied and traumatised by an authority figure when he was young then so what if he's happy that person's gone.

Then again if Mr Morgan was a nice guy Morrissey would not be the man he is today.

Oh, and to be pedantic it was Vincent Morgan.

  • I think it's about time Morrissey spoke up with regards to his true feelings. Previously we've only had esoteric tit-bits, in this case 'The Headmasters Ritual'. I too was born & raised in the north of England and I truly empathise with Morrissey's words on those rotten days. The crashing bores of this country do need a wake up call, from the government to local councils and everything they so sluggishly control.

  • I understand his reasons to make such an announcement! I felt a huge sense of relief when I heard of the death of a teacher who years ago crammed food into my mouth, then held up a glass of milk and forced me to drink it...at the time I was only 7 years old! I did throw up all over her - instant revenge - but I had to then run from her and lock myself in the bathroom as she chased me and yelled for me to come out "this instant". Oh, and she loved using rulers and thin blocks of wood to smack us about with, too...lovely memories, those!

  • Should there be no ramifications for those who publicly humiliated, tortured, derided, chastised, bullied, insulted, picked on, belittled and ultimately FAILED TO EDUCATE???
They should be found out and brought to justice for the deeds they perpetrated in the name of religion or education - or both.
I don't forget you you stinking bastards.

  • To paraphrase Morrissey, is it really so strange that he should feel (and state publicly) glad about the passing of those who, in a veiled professional capacity, systematically abused children? The type of disciplinary "education" these misguided, belligerent "teachers" dished out has entered the public record in many a court of law as exactly what it was: child abuse.

Is the world a better place without child abusers? I think so. Should we feel better about their passing? I don't see why not, particularly for the victims of these maladjusted perpetrators.

  • Thank god for the no contact laws, I think being hit by teachers (as they used to be allowed to!) would have scarred me for life. In my mind they shouldn't even be allowed to shout at children.

.. and what's with the 'controversy' every time morrissey is glad someone is dead/wishes someone dead..? I mean, it happens a lot.

  • Why does everyone target everything he says and blow it out of proportion?!!! I still remember my 7th grade english teacher Ms. Schmidt, who wore her makeup like she was going on stage in a broadway play, accuse me of cheating on a spelling test in front of the whole class! Considering English/Spelling my best subject in life I was humiliated and still rant about it!!! This was over 20 years ago!!! Can any of you ridiculers say that you don't still remember anyone who ever belittled, teased, humiliated or condemned you for no GOOD reason? If you say you don't or it doesn't bother you still in your heart of hearts then you are LYING, to yourself especially!!!! Come on!!, quit analysing everything he does and says and making mountains out of molehills! No wonder he stays out of the public eye so much!!! I do to and for a lot less reason than he has! Is anyone else sick to death of all the meanness and plain cruelty that people inflict daily?
