In the latest edition of Q Magazine (September 2004), there is a letter written by none other than Stephen Street (producer of 'Viva Hate'), in which he dismisses Vini Reilly's claims in the Q Smiths/Moz Special that he arranged the strings for 'Angel, Angel We Go Down Together, and that the guillotine sfx at the end of 'Margaret On The Guillotine' was also not Reilly's idea.

sounded quite angry in that Q interview. Is it really true that he's not credited at all on the new edition of Viva Hate? Not sure what he meant by his name being left off the album. Did Moz promise him a belated production credit or something?

Ah, on the old edition, it just says "words - Morrissey, music - Stephen Street."

I tend to believe Vini, just because Morrissey has a habit of making his musicians do extra work and not crediting them, but that's an old story.

Yeah, I started listening to the Smiths in 1984. But I was one of that early generation of Smiths fans who was very, very depressive and didn't have a life! Looking back, it wasn't all that healthy :(

Did you happen to see the Young Guns BBC documentary on the Smiths? It's downloadable somewhere on this site. I saw it years after it first aired. Amazing. It really rekindled my love for the Smiths.

And now it seems like they may reform!! I don't know how I feel about that.

No disrespect to Vini Reilly, but if you read Johnny Rogan's book, wherein Vini speaks about making Viva Hate, you find a complete contradiction of what he's now saying. If I read this correctly, Vini is now complaining that he wasn't given a writing credit on 'Viva Hate' but he told Johnny Rogan he thought that "those songs were saved from being utterly mediocre only by Morrissey's performance". He then tells how Street completely restricted his input, that he added a few effects to Dial A Cliche "to make it interesting for [himself]" but that he was "waiting for the vocal to go down" cos Street's backing tracks were so dull. Rather suggests that Street wrote the tracks and Vini added what he could instrumentally don't you think? In other words, Vini didn't co-write Viva Hate with Moz, Stephen Street did, but Vini spiced it up with his guitar-playing. All this by Vini's own admission. He and Street certainly seem to intensely dislike one another!

  • Hi! Sixteen years later my brain has gone soft and I immagine a lot of things - like writing the music to Viva Hate. I want some part of Morrisseys genius as well.

  • Are people going to try and cash in on Morrissey from now on? I have the feeling he's gotten big enough for certain people to start doing so whether it's for money or just to be heard after so many years.

I agree with a previous poster. How can they remember such details after so long? Stephen Street has produced so many albums how can he keep track on details?

...I think I had emailed a few lyrics to Moz a few years back...hmmm
