Re: Just about every Leonard Cohen song.

You know, I would appreciate Cohen much more if only he would liberate his deadpan baritone from all the soulful feminine backing that mars so much of his work. Even then, his first two albums are classic.

"Like a bird on the wire / Like a drunk in a midnight choir / I have tried in my way to be free / Like a worm on a hook / Like a knight from some old fashioned book / I have saved all my ribbons for thee"

Bird On a Wire

* *

You can hear the boats go by / You can spend the night beside her / And you know that she's half crazy / But that's why you want to be there"

Suzanne

* *

"Well they lay down beside me, I made my confession to them / They touched both my eyes and I touched the dew on their hem / If your life is a leaf that the seasons tear off and condemn / They will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem"

Sisters of Mercy

* *

"I cried, "oh, lady midnight, I fear that you grow old / The stars eat your body and the wind makes you cold."

Lady Midnight

* *

"I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare / There's only one bed and there's only one prayer; / I listen all night for your step on the stair"

Re: Just about every Leonard Cohen song.

And of course this one:

'Well, maybe I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew ya.
And I've seen your flag on the marble arch
But love is not a victory march
It's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah.'

I Love that line from "parachute" by simon Joyner (or is it the other way around?)- very romantic , whats the rest of the song like? I tried soulseek.

Yes, excellent, but sung much better by Jeff Buckley of course!

Parachute

I think that smile is shutting down
Or maybe it's just flinching
The sun shot up just like a child
But these old hands are only inching
Would you believe it is my fault
I went and made myself lonely
I miss the way she said my name
Like I was a distant city

Winter came and swept away
The birds nest from my chimney
The cold air marched right through the walls
And settled her in my belly
But her memory keeps me tossing
Those letters into the fire
And the flames they're twitching
A love which has retired

Now New York is not a place I'd choose
To have my body buried
But Omaha has got the trains to take
The snow to the cemetery
There is a place called home i believe
If you're willing to step out of the loop
I miss the way she held on to me
Like I was a parachute

Autumngirlsoup

"Get me on the boil and reduce me
To a simmering wreck with a slow kiss
To the back of my neck
Carve up my heart on a very low flame
Separate my feelings then pour them down the drain
Close my eyes and sweeten me with lies
Pierce my skin with a few well chosen words
Now you can stuff me with whatever you’ve got handy
And on a cold grey day a cold grey man will do"

Ana Ng

"Make a hole with a gun perpendicular
To the name of this town in a desk-top globe
Exit wound in a foreign nation
Showing the home of the one this was written for
My apartment looks upside down from there
Water spirals the wrong way out the sink
And her voice is a backwards record
It’s like a whirlpool and it never ends"

Called the blood of the exploited working class
