Thank you, Sarah Palin, no to death panels

Senators exclude end-of-life provision from bill

Thu Aug 13, 1:55 pm ET
WASHINGTON – Key senators are excluding a provision on end-of-life care from health overhaul legislation after language in a House bill caused a furor.

Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said in a statement Thursday that the provision had been dropped from consideration because it could be misinterpreted or implemented incorrectly.

A health care bill passed by three House committees allows Medicare to reimburse doctors for voluntary counseling sessions about end-of-life decisions. But critics have claimed the provision could lead to death panels and euthanasia for seniors.

The Senate Finance Committee is still working to complete a bill.

And with that, Sarah Palin has done more good for America than President Obama has done in his first 7 months in office (which wasn't so hard, since Obama has done nothing good and has done much harm). Of course they mocked Sarah Palin when she highlighted this concern. They always like to mock her. But thanks to her speaking out, they have had to change their troubling plans.

I know, we're not supposed to voice our opinions on health care reform in President Obama's America. In fact, if you do so at a townhall meeting for the people, a Democrat is likely to be on her cell phone as you are speaking:

Or, you'll wind up on some enemies list of the Obama administration.

But I notice that the number of threads where SoLowers post pics of Obama without his shirt while throwing themselves at him like Monica Lewinsky have died down.

And we can remember Worm, who assured the SoLowers that nothing could be learned from Obama's 20-year deep friendship with Jeremiah Wright, and his worship at Jeremiah Wright's disgustingly racist church. Nothing to see there, move along, said Worm.

But was it a surprise that the politician who was so in love with the racist Jeremiah Wright made a national issue out of his friend Henry Louis Gates' confrontation with a police officer? And was it a surprise that Obama leapt to side with the full-of-himself Harvard prof? Even though Gates acted like a total ass to the police officer who was just doing his job?

That "beer summit" might've been funny, except it took place in the midst of this ridiculous president doing extreme damage to America.

But at least Sarah Palin spoke out and they had to revise their plans with respect to the death panels in their health care legislation.

Lots of other Americans are starting to speak out.

We don't like what we see.

This Barack Obama.

They told us we were stupid if we didn't see how brilliant he was.

And, we'd be racists if we didn't vote for the most socialistic candidate in American history over the moderate-centrist war hero John McCain.

So now we find ourselves stuck with the worst prez ever, with the Democrats controlling all of Congress.

Behold.

And pray that we put him and them in check very soon.

I have faith in the American people.

And what, exactly, is wrong with "socialistic" leanings? The UK, Canada, Sweden, Norway, etc., etc., seem to be doing pretty well to me.

I don't know why I am always so surprised by how conservative many active members on this board are. And how loony they can be.

Re: Thank you, Sarah Palin. NO TO DEATH PANELS! Down with Obama!

I made an appointment last week with my Senator's office to discuss health care reform and share my opinions and my personal situation with the staff there. I hope that I presented my arguments in a cogent, rational and intelligent manner.

Any citizen with real concerns can receive updates from the congressional committes on what is currently being included and excluded from the bill, as it is being written. This is the only way to have a rational debate.

I felt it was important to voice my concerns directly to my Senator's office, and his staff took the time to discuss the issue in depth. For anyone who takes this legislation seriously, I recommend making that call, or visiting your Senator's office in person. It is vital that cooler heads prevail.

Theo, I think it's fabulous that you like Sarah Palin so much. Lots of men would feel intimidated by a good-looking woman who's also smarter than they are. Kudos!

Hadn't heard from you in awhile. Did the Promise Keepers Summer Discovery Camp let out finally?

Here's some grown-up discussion of the bill. From a Senator. From a Senator who actually sponsored a very similar provision for Medicare in 2007. A Senator from Georgia. A Republican. Debunking the Death Panel myth. A Republican. From Georgia.

Who knew Republicans could string whole sentences together?

Excerpt:

How did this become a question of euthanasia?

I have no idea. I understand -- and you have to check this out -- I just had a phone call where someone said Sarah Palin's web site had talked about the House bill having death panels on it where people would be euthanized. How someone could take an end of life directive or a living will as that is nuts. You're putting the authority in the individual rather than the government. I don't know how that got so mixed up.

You're saying that this is not a question of government. It's for individuals.

It empowers you to be able to make decisions at a difficult time rather than having the government making them for you.

Of course Isakson flip-flopped a day later, but that was to be expected. He's up for re-election in 2010 and the party is heading over a cliff thanks to idiots like Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh. Will they take America with them? Probably.

I just read this a few hours ago.

Even after all we've been through in this cursed 21st century, this moment we are wallowing in is a new low.

As per the evolution thread: Devolution is here, it is real, it is happening now. Ain't life grand?

It sure is! We've got some smart people left, though. There's a chance, albeit a small one. Thank heaven that folks like Stephen Hawking weren't born in crappy socialist England, otherwise the nefarious NHS would have put a pillow over their heads as teenagers.

I think this is one of the most fabulously stupid "political" talking points I've heard recently.

Oh, how we were giggling about it this morning.

You sir, are a LIAR. Ideological differences are fine, you're perfectly allowed to be as wrongheaded as you like, but what I do not abide is blatant, outright dishonesty. You've got a consistent pattern of repeating things that you actually know are false. If you wanted to advocate neoliberal economics, thats' fine, we could have an argument, but you're just plain LYING. This makes it impossible to have any respect for you, if you submitted something like this to any college professor worth his salt you'd get an automatic F for MAKING SHIT UP.

You know FULL WELL that the legislation is NOTHING AT ALL like you describe. First, it was introduced by a REPUBLICAN, not only that but a dyed-in-the-wool GEORGIA republican, Senator John Isakson. FACT. He said that anyone who could confuse his proposed legislation as having ANYTHING REMOTELY TO DO with euthanasia is "nuts", his words. FACT. What the legislation ACTUALLY proposed was for terminal patients', people who are incurable, or near death, to have a paid-for consultation which they are free to refuse, with a medical professional who can explain to the patient and family members what their options are, like hospice care, what can and can't be done for the patient, etc. FACT. This was introduced to give patients more control over their healthcare and to keep them better informed. FACT. Sarah Palin also publicly endorsed IDENTICAL legislation in 2008, as did Senator Grassley in 2003, so they were for it,..before they were against it. FACT. You know this. I have plenty of opinions and I get in a lot of political debates but when advocating your position have the decency not to traffic in lies and misinformation.

So now we find ourselves stuck with the worst prez ever, with the Democrats controlling all of Congress.

No, you guys had the worst president ever, or, at least in the last 50 years or so. Thats' why you're party got reamed in the national and local elections. Because you're party ran the show and nearly ran the country into the f***ing ground, starting TWO bullshit wars, disregarding those poor people in New Orleans, and ruining the economy, and thats' the tip of the iceberg. The Bush administration killed more Americans than al-Qaeda.

Even in the UK, socialist is thrown about like a dirty word. ;)

Free healthcare is just so basic, it's ludicrous that there's such a row. Despite it's flaws the NHS is brilliant.

Re: Thank you, Sarah Palin. NO TO DEATH PANELS! Down with Obama!

I've been saying we need more socialism in America for years..:blushing:

Re: Thank you, Sarah Palin. NO TO DEATH PANELS! Down with Obama!

The NHS is undoubtedly one of the greatest things the UK has ever done. Health is probably the most important issue a nation has to deal with and providing high quality healthcare for everyone, regardless of how much money they have, is simply fantastic. You'll find that the vast majority of people in Britain would never get rid of it, and this is a country, that ever since Thatcher, cannot be described as being socialist. No party could ever get elected in the UK if they vowed to privatise the NHS, that's why David Cameron is rushing to defend it. How he must hate the far right nutters in his party that still let slip every so often, exposing what his party is really like.

I'm shocked at the amount of scaremongering going on in America. I keep hearing how they want to remain free, yet a lot of them continue to be so easily led by the media and the right. I thought being free meant you were able to think for yourself but obviously not  People like Sarah Palin are scary. The fact that people like her can be taken so seriously, never mind adored, by a significant amount of people is frightening. I don't know what's more scary, the fact that people can be so stupid, or how people can be so heartless as to oppose a fair and equal system of healthcare, branding one that is, "evil".
