Robert Herrick's poetry and its structure is commented on by Morrissey in Mention::Autobiography:

Robert Herrick (1591–1674) writes in what is termed ‘duple rhythm’, which is a ploy of two syllables per line – almost like two tapping feet responding to each other:

Thus I

Passe by,

And die:

As one,

Unknown,

And go.

The secrets of the female form are Robert Herrick’s poetic pleasures, and he writes repeatedly to his ‘mistress’ Julia:

Julia, when thy Herrick dies,

Close thou upon thy poet’s eyes;

And his last breath, let it be

Taken in by none but thee.

Although they who write modern pop songs could never deliver lines as strong as Robert Herrick’s, there is no one else appointed to attempt such, just as there is no one else so freely delegated.

(Morrissey cites: "Upon His Departure Hence" and "To Julia. (III)", 1891).
Morrissey describes Tony via Mention::Autobiography:

"‘You must call your next album Steven,’ says Manchester luvvie Tony Wilson, and I stare back at him – wondering if he had ever actually had a good idea in his life.
Wilson repeatedly turns up at Morrissey concerts and then automatically lambasts me in print or on radio almost as if he enjoys his hatreds more than he enjoys his joys. ‘Let’s face it,’ he says on Australian radio, ‘Morrissey really IS a horrible person.’ Weeks later I am behind the wheel of my sky-blue Jag in Los Angeles, stalled at traffic lights. I spot whom I think to be Jerry Springer walking across the street in front of me (Miller Drive, should you care), but of course it is Urmston’s answer to nothing, and Wilson bows his head towards me and offers a smile – as three-faced as ever he was."

Speaking to FACT Magazine (originally in 2003), Wilson stated:

What band do you wish you had signed to your record label?

The Music and Cat on Form. Thank God I missed The Smiths ‘cause Gretton, my late partner who hailed them as the new Beatles, told Johnny the demo was shit and he wouldn’t sign them till they gave him a good demo. In Mention::Autobiography, Morrissey says of them:

"Record Song Book is an expensive magazine that prints the lyrics of famous or bubbling songs of the month, and I practice with invented melodies on the songs that I haven’t heard. It is only the singing voice, I decide, that tells us how things became how they are, and You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’ by the Righteous Brothers had led me to the light. In this duet between Bill and Bobby, the language of despair becomes beautiful, and the final forty-five seconds hit such call-and-respond excitement that I am now in danger of feeling too much. Bobby’s rooftop falsetto is the fire in the belly, whilst Bill’s deep-chested leveling is the full invasion. Suddenly everything else in life is in question."

Further:

"But again and again it is the sight of the Righteous Brothers singing You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’ (to each other?), gazing into their own separate distances. I cherish each glimpse that television allows – so unrepeatable, and God forbid that anyone should talk too loudly or meddle with the sound. Yes, there he goes again – Cherub Bobby swooping up into a female scream, and visual art unravels before me."
In his 2011 book "AutoFellatio: A Memoir" he states:

"With his agreement, I once wrote to a Morrissey fan website forum under the pseudonym Abigail Lawson to point out that ‘Little Man, What Now?’ was not, as popularly believed, a lyric about the British child actor Jack Wild. It is a circumstantial verse to the actor Malcolm McFee who appeared in the 1970s British television series, Please Sir! Abigail Lawson received no less than seventy-five death threats. Impressive."

The "fan website forum" in question appears to be Morrissey-solo. "Abigail Lawson" posted the following forum post on July 31, 2004:

Abigail Lawson writes:

I am a source close to Morrissey.
I feel moved to write to you to correct the post by Miranda Grey that Jack Wild is the inspiration behind "Little Man, What Now".
"Little Man, What Now" is most positively not inspired by the child actor Jack Wild, and in no way refers to him.
The words to the aforementioned song are concerned with a British actor called Malcolm McFee who appeared in two (UK) situation comedies in the early 1970s: "Please, Sir!" and "The Fenn Street Gang". He also appeared briefly in the film "Oh What A Lovely War!" (1969).
He died of cancer in Braintree, Essex in November, 2001.
I hope this lays to rest the Wild misapprehension."
"The young Morrissey garret was a microcosm of Pop symbolism. The walls were covered in large, framed photographs of the New York Dolls and James Dean along with a signed print of the British comedy actress Esma Cannon."
Cited by Morrissey (Jun 14, 2023) as a reason for Bonfire Of Teenagers not being released:

“It’s a clear display of how censorian the music industry has become. It is a new part of the music industry that does not work and that nobody likes. Music should be the primary democracy, as all art should be, and any effort to keep people away from it simply invites deeper discussion. There is no point banning ‘Bonfire of Teenagers’ because somebody somewhere might be offended if they heard it. Why waste time on other people’s mental incapacities? And where is Capitol’s support for the kids who were murdered in that Manchester bonfire on 22 May 2017? Although Capitol claims to be a label of ‘diversity’ it is very difficult to see their humanity. If you are only prepared to release music that draws people’s minds away from thinking then you are unfit for any contact with creative people. Songs are literary compositions, and writing music should be an unrestricted open form. It seems to me that Capitol Records cannot observe the possibility that their artists or their potential customers have ever thought. But silencing certain artists achieves nothing, and simply makes the bonfire burn taller and louder. The moral perspective at Capitol Records who is sitting like a hen on an egg on ‘Bonfire of Teenagers’ is Michelle Jubelirer, who played no small part in removing ‘World Peace is None Of Your Business’ from the shelves in 2014 - determined that it could not sell or be heard. The same creeping culture of censorship at Capitol Records has taken place with ‘Bonfire Of Teenagers’, and the civic structure of Capitol now appears fascist. I still have hope in the music industry, but there are evidently several powerful faces within it that have no honest interest in music … and you follow them into the shadows at your peril.”

Relevance
He was the subject of a Central RIP post in January 2024.

From his art website:

Mike Hinc is an artist living and working in France and the UK. Having worked extensively in the music industry with artists including Jonathan Richman, Morrissey, The Smiths, Nico, Primal Scream, The Birthday Party, and The Sisters of Mercy, he is not unfamiliar with the cult of celebrity and its commodification. Mike works in diverse media - celebrating transience, inadequacy and the contradictions of a commodified world.

On October 18,1999, after Morrissey pulled out of a concert at Schlachthof, Dresden - Mike Hinc was quoted by the NME offering an explanation for the short notice cancellation:

“There was no direct access to the stage, we couldn’t put our lights up and it was just the wrong shape. It just couldn’t be done.”

(Although Schlachthof, Dresden being a converted slaughterhouse was thought to be the actual reason).

In Neil Taylor's: "Document and Eyewitness - An Intimate History of Rough Trade" (Orion, July 2010), Mike says of The Smiths in Europe:

"I'd booked them on the European tour. Italy was difficult, not least because the promoter had lied, basically, and didn't provide what was promised to be provided. He didn't meet hospitality requirements for band or crew, which would have included hotels, and one gig was meant to be in a theatre and the theatre turned out to be a large tent."

And further:

"We went to a venue where there was a catwalk leading out into the audience, which Morrissey was supposed to walk down. No way. I got the promoter aside and explained that he wasn't a model and that The Smiths had had a bad experience in Italy. The promoter suddenly stood up tall – he looked like something out of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, with hair down to his arse – loudly clicked his heels together in military fashion and said, 'We understand you English because unlike the Italians we are both military nations.' After that, everything went smoothly on the Spanish tour. I was pleased, if a little nonplussed. At this time, nothing was likely to be good enough for the band, in spite of everyone promising them the world. I think they knew what they were doing – getting themselves into a situation and then poking it to see if it moved."
