Jarman's music video project was premiered on BBC2’s "Rock Around the Clock" in September 1986. It was also shown prior to certain screenings of the film "Sid and Nancy" (1986).
Morrissey, as cited by QAGOMA (via The Catalogue, 1988), stated:

"When Derek Jarman made three films for The Smiths, I don't think anyone expected them to be popular – how could they be? Jarman was far too talented."
