“Magic Mike” Star Joe Manganiello to Star in Film About Punk Rock Group The Smiths - Showbiz411

Gay artists, he said,*can find themselves dealing with a double dose of cultural alienation. He talked about his teenaged years, listening to the Smiths while lying on his bed and staring out the window. He compared the group’s enigmatic lead singer and lyricist, Morrissey, to Scott Walker, and said: "Think about how hard it is for anyone to pick up a guitar, to become any kind of an artist at all, to overcome the obstacles to expressing yourself in that way. But add to that being gay and having to write your songs with elaborate metaphors and layers of meaning, because you can’t really say what you mean. That makes it much harder — and almost always much better."

Kijak hasn’t found it easy, either. "I don’t connect with the mainstreamed, A-list gay culture," he said, "but then there are a lot of ’queer queers’ who are out of the mainstream. … I feel like the alternative I belong to isn’t a sexuality thing; it’s your artistic pursuit, your point of view, your political, social and cultural beliefs, that set you apart."

yeah was definitely not just about attitude or everything remotely close to being counterculture would be punk rock. american punk, hardcore, was very different than british punk rock as we didnt have as good a social safety net to fund it and the people. american hardcore was much more a social movement with bands rather than a social movement started by music and bands. that didnt come until later here in the u.s. american hardcore wasnt really influenced by british punk rock except in weird ways which is why the original bands dont sound anything alike. we couldnt get the records here but only see the pictures and read about the ideas and descriptions. the minute men didnt even know why people tuned there strings. they thought it was a personal preference like i just like my strings loose or what ever and it for sure did not start out as being political. everything got codified to a sound as people started to copy the guitar sounds of a few very original people, circle jerks im very much looking your way, but in the beginning nothing sounded similar and you could tell who were the musicians dabbling, ahem x, and who were part of the social movement. flipper sounds nothing like the screamers who sound nothing like the germs who sound nothing like gexa x who sound nothing like the minutemen who sound nothing like social distortion, who was a great musician but was also seriously part of the movement, who sounded nothing like christian death which all sounded nothing like glenn branca or soic youth and the no wave scene. black flag was incredibly original but after damaged everyone copied them, again im looking you way circle jerks, and he changed the sound immediately because of this. gregs a very smart person and very talented with i think loose nut being my fav album of theres. later everyone copied minor thtreat and that was just like the last nail in the coffin for that scene along with a bunch of other factors and they being intelligent enough to realize this started fugazi and revolution summer to keep there thing going and successfully reached new heights on there own terms. the only factor the ramones had on this music was speed which is why they dont get cited by a lot of these bands as influences. they were more of a british thing despite being american

I've always wondered why Henry Rollins didn't keep his band SOA. I understand that he jumped at the chance to join Black Flag because they were the bigger band, but I really love that SOA 7inch. I'm thinking he could have done both, but I really don't know the story behind it. I agree that what makes a scene great, is when all the bands have their own personality. The same thing happened with Hip Hop, where everyone started to copy each other.

Steve,

You missed the entire month of April personal training sessions. Even Ozzy made the entire power walk to Zuma and back to Malibu and John Lydon even called you a tossey wacker. If you want the Vegas residency...you have to earn it! . Wayne Newton is not going to back down without a fight and the Boots duet dream at the Bellagio with Nancy will never happen until you get motivated. See you tomorrow at 4:30 on the beach.

i dont know as much about hip hop though i like stuff here and there. not an soa fan and from what ive read most people were indifferent to it. i dont think he could have done both. one because ginn who ran every aspect of the band would never allow it in a million yeas and two the touring they did was really extensive, there are books just devoted to there first couple of nation tours and how that circuit of places still stands today and was a frame work for a national indie music system. they were pretty prolific in touring and recording and if had dared say to ginn im gonna take time to record with soa so you haveta wait for me hed have dropped him pretty quickly as rollins worked for him in no uncertain terms. i mean rollins never wrote a word or note of music for flag. ginns a personal hero of mine. ian was the person who of course encouraged him to join the band though and gave him the final push confidence he needed as i think maybe dez at the time moved to second guitar. rollins band was pretty good though

'Shoplifters of the World'? Would 'Hang the DJ' not be a more apt title?

Plus I can't think how they're gonna get an hour and a half's worth of narrative out of this incident.

Ok, this Joe guy is smokin hot i hope there are some nude scenes.

Smith's fan???? That guy gets more ass than a toilet seat in the women's restroom. Very, very confused....

LOOK EVERYONE ! Simon Wratten is here to save us! Hallelujah! Imagine his life, scouring a forum he hates for things to get angry about. That's Simon Wratten for you. Look him up. He's odd.

I mean, imagine running a blog full of made up bollocks and conspiracy nutjobness? Furthermore, imagine that blog is populated by IMAGINARY people, because no one takes it seriously? And imagine keeping it going and going and going because you're so far down the rabbit-hole of your creation that to back out would admit defeat? Imagine all of that. Then imagine you're the kind of guy who scours a forum looking for things to get angry about - a forum you hate. Imagine all of that. Really.

I'm saying the Smiths were 'punk' compared to the safe synth pop,etc of the day.

Oh yeah sure if you're talking about comparisons but my grandmother was punk compared to all that shit. Punk as a movement in the seventies The Smiths definitely were not. There's no denying though that there was a punk ethos to the Smiths' mission, so to speak.

"Nah" to what? The movie, the extra royalties, Moz's approval. I don't get it.

I think it's pretty obvious he's talking about the movie. What royalties? You don't get a dividend because a movie features an abstract representation of you. Marr won't get anything for this. If Marr owned the rights to the concept then maybe he'd see some money. But it's a film about a pointless event. God what am I bothering to explain this for?

Handsome Joe Manganiello should consider doing something like Shirtlifters of the World, a gay porno set to Smiths songs. Now THAT I'd be interested to see.

If anybody knows about films, it's you... cos of all those films you made.
