MORRIZSEY

Wrong species
Do you find it hard to evaluate Smiths fame?

You can speak to many people who have genuinely never heard of The Smiths , and yet they're hailed as one of the greatest bands of all time by those in the know. As fans it's difficult to be objective, but are they still a 'hidden gem'?

Sorry, title of this thread got completely messed up while I was trying to post about the Salford Lads club BBC programme

Hidden? No... Maybe not -as- big or "culturally relevant" in some places as they are in the UK, where tubby, old TV commentators seem to like making occasional stupid, out-of-place references to the band/Morrissey in the form of ham-fisted, sarcastic jokes/quasi-insult-stereotypes that are dumbed down enough so that "everyone gets them" (which might be so for the UK, just not America), but they still manage to make it onto the soundtracks of countless schlockfests like The Wedding Singer and a bunch of other incredibly sickly-sweet, commercialized "Indie kid" cliché-friendly romantic cheese here in the US too.

Also, I never find bands like The Wedding Present or James for instance being sold at the mall, but there's always going to be at least one or two copies of the same 2-3 recent BEST OF collections from The Smiths you see in, like, every major music store on earth, no doubt.
