"List of the Lost" review in NME; media mentions

An anonymous person writes (original post):

Here's another review, this time from the NME. Interesting that the NME have been full of gushing praise for Moz for the last couple of years, but even they are slagging the book off:

"List Of The Lost is a confused, often quite embarrassing slab of cringeworthy sex, clichés and bizarre, stilted dialogue...
Imagine Morrissey bent double, pumping away at his bulbous salutation, and you’ve imagined his book."

Morrissey - 'List Of The Lost' by Jordan Bassett (2 of 5) - NME.com
A bizarrely cringeworthy and overblown debut from the musical icon

An anonymous person also writes (original post):

The NME presents: 'Nine nice things to say about Morrissey's much-ridiculed debut novel', so hurrah! - some positivity...though admittedly they also refer to List of the Lost as an 'unreadable pamphlet' and 'a book so embarrassing it’s like seeing your dad wanking.'

Nine Nice Things To Say About Morrissey's Much-Ridiculed Debut Novel by Jordan Bassett - NME blog

Forget Morrissey’s ‘bulbous salutation’, here are my good sex awards by Flic Everett - Comment is free / The Guardian
The singer’s debut novel has been deservedly mocked for its lurid sex scenes. If only he’d studied Flaubert, Kundera or Chaucer before he started writing …

Morrissey's next Sam Project should be a video of him reading and laughing at every book critic's critique standing in front of a curtain ala the Mean Tweets on Jimmy Kimmel. :p

Even the NME, who by rights should be cautious based on its track record have jumped on the List of the Lost hate bandwagon, albeit from this angle. Nice things to say include the cover and the fact that the book is short. Well done, NME. What a pity your dwindling print readership is causing some serious circling of the drain!

sounds jealous

Doubt that very much - they have just released their new album on Mute - got rave reviews in virtually every publication with a number of them saying its their best record in 25 years, do you think Morrissey will ever get the chance for anyone to say that about his new album?

I am a fan of Morrisseys music and live shows by the way and he should be getting this amount of interest - 475000 listens to their new single on you tube!

Interview with New Order here - there is a 30 second reference to Morrisseys lack of label and his novel at 26mins and 20 secs - the drummers reaction sums up the novel!

Thanks for this Surface.
I skipped to 26:20 because I need to retire to bed (long hours) but will watch in full tmrw.
The key word seems to be 'change, ' if only our awkward friend could take a leaf out of their book.
Hope you had a great night at the last performance last week.

I feel bad for Morrissey only because I know the Man can write; he has written some wonderful liner notes for the Ramones and about the early Manchester music scene and gay scene. That crazy essay about the his friend James Maker running down the Moors in his high heels from a naked ghost was a better read than this hot mess; It's Burroughs without the heroin.

I don't care. I still love him.

It's not really a fair assessment whilst making this statement being that Morrissey has put out some rather outstanding work during that same time period unlike New Order. Not being snarky. Just stating fact.

There's no need for him to be jealous. Their latest album is really good, and Mute are releasing it in seemingly almost every format and permutation under the sun. No cheap, shitty t-shirt packages for them. New Order seem to have gone all in, and judging by the reviews were right to do so.

So then, as Stanley Unwin is dead, who is rumoured for the reading of the Morrissey audiobook? Steven Toast?

I did Benny, best one since Blackpool on Quarry tour for me but I'm just into music and live performance and he is pretty good at that - all his other baggage i.e. his mid song comments, meat is murder, novels, the queen, dogs, cats, the chinese, peta - have no interest in all that crap.

It must be very easy for anyone to say that it is New Orders best LP in 25 years because every thing they've released has been shit!

I absolutely agree on your comments that he has put out some outstanding work in his time but facts are facts and at this time in his career he has completely screwed himself up - if he wasn't such a prima donna he should be signing for the likes of Mute and getting all the promotion that New Order are getting.

He needs to have a good look at the way he conducts himself - you never hear New Order spouting shit at every opportunity!

you also dont see new order mentioned everywhere from malcome in the middle to being the opening theme song to drew carry to the numerous other mentions. if we had an unexpected new order thread it would be pretty slim as they dont reach

People don't jump on stage for a hug from New Order, they do for Morrissey. He is really adored by his fans and is selling concerts worldwide. I don't think he has anything to worry about .

Where is the TTY chart, comment updates? Sorry Moz, you gotta take the good and the bad.

Disclaimer: Morrissey has been my favorite music artist for over 20 years. Traveled to see 3 shows on the American leg of the tour.

He speaks his mind and he really doesn't care how people take it. His solo career is very interesting - a few good albums & a few mishits. It is completely erroneous for us 'fans' to consider that he is ruining his career. What career? He clearly isn't bothered anymore and he writes to satisfy his own muse. We expect greatness because of The Smiths and Vauxhal & I ... which, when you think about it.. is insane.

wonder what itll chart with all of its praise and press. will all of those clicks translate to copies sold. what did moz chart with supposedly none of those things. as to the novel i have not yet read it but some of the complaints seem really like a stretch. i mean so many characters in capotes novels never do or say what a normal person would. the last line and whole ending of summer crossing is pretty far from reality and its my fav ending line to any novel. i also have no idea what you guys consider to be good literature or even what literature you even like. i mean rowling was thrown around and thats just, i mean no no

He doesn't have a career it is his life and if you look at the tour for the last 20 years he has probably spent more time with his audience than his family. The most we ever get to do is sing a long and an occasional hand shake but we are a part of his life. Don't expect to understand him.

its free falling, its down to no 38.
turn off the light the partys over.
