Lyrics to Smiler With Knife

While I don't care where the specific origin comes from within morrissey. Maybe my simpleton attitude, but I just let the words present a visual image in my mind, and interpreted with my life's experience. To me this song is akin to the sentiments of asleep.

Georgia swiftly kills him with a knife.

No she doesn't. :) I've just finished the book. Loved it, thanks for pointing us in its direction but apart from the title, I think it has little to do with the song.

In the book, Chilly Clito (not his real name) and Georgia tussle a bit in the dark at the end, he tries to put her eyes out (not nice!) breaks her little finger, but she escapes, while he is captured and locked up in a loony-bin -as he is actually completely mad, in a rich, facist good looking way- . All this after an inordinate amount of time spent flirting, flying around and many other quaint, far-fetched, hilarious adventures.

She does try to finish him off by starting a fire in his stately home at one point, but fails. Ah well. It's the thought that counts... :)

So anyway, some ladies into paragliding and scones here might find this book charming too, but I can't enlighten you on the meaning of the song. I agree it's likely to be about penises, which bores me senseless, personally, but there you go.

Looks like there's a book by Julio Cortazar with that title too, if you wish to investigate that. I for one can't be bothered, I just like simple literature like wot Cecil writes.
Next up: "the Camp Summer Mystery." Aye...Should keep us busy...

It's highly ironic that the Blue Rose people see "Smiler With Knife" as a nod to them, referring to this (admittedly well-written) short story. They've been mindf****d by MorrisseysWorld for years now and won't realise it.

You are right, that story really is well-written; probably because it's written by Morrissey.

I also initially thought this song detailed a homosexual encounter, using death as a metaphor for orgasm. It wouldn't be the first time Morrissey used the act of stabbing as an allusion to sex (this picture and "Scandinavia" come to mind).

However, hand in glove's interpretation is very intriguing and entirely plausible considering Morrissey's propensity for incorporating literary references in his lyrics...

Good point. Interestingly, though having not heard it, James' new album 'Le Petite Mort' is a euphemism for 'orgasm' in French, meaning literally a 'small death'.

No, I really think that Smiler is a man. The line "Slam-in one-shot gentle pain" I see as describing the act of penetrating and being penetrated ("slam in" meaning "penetration", "one shot" meaning "ejaculation" and "gentle pain" meaning "being penetrated"). But of course this interpretation is just one possible interpretation of that line and maybe not even the most plausible one.
Pathetic. Go watch some porn and stop posting such idiotic interpretations. Not very high IQ you have. Idiot.

Oh dear...

And you can just go and f*** off. Or put your high IQ on display and tell us what the song is really about.

You can check her IQ on allyouneedismorrissey.com. All she ever says is "Love him in black!!" when a picture of Morrissey in black is posted. Alternatively "Love him in white!!" or "Love him in blue!!". All quotes plus silly heart smileys.

I think your theory is right, it's about a gay relationship, where one of them feels guilt for their impulses. Also liked the short story from that Blue Rose guy. Blue Rose can f**k off though.

Gulity??!!Please...Morrissey doesnt feel gulity about his sexuality so stop this cheap dr.Freud theories. And yes i love him in black and blue and white etc. Yeah he writes only about sex and gay relationships.Better read his interviews more carefully before you start posting your stupid theories.

You don't have a theory. You just don't seem to like the fact that Morrissey is gay.

And no one has said that Morrissey feels gulity about his sexuality. What has been said is that Smiler feels guilt because of his homosexual desires. You got to separate the art from the artist. And no, not all of Morrissey's songs are about sex and male-male relationships. But some. Dear God Please Help Me, You Have Killed Me...

Aha and YOU know what Morrissey was feeling or thinking when he wrote that song? It's his catholic upbringing. He was taught that having homosexual feelings is wrong. Emil's theory makes much more sense than your pathetic ramblings. "Oh, Morrissey wouldn't do this or think that, idiots". Yeah right, stupid. Go home to AYNIM.

Funny how you manage to say exactly ZERO with so many words. Enlighten us please, what are your thoughts on the song, in case you have any?

Instead of being such a c*** offer a better and more plausible interpretation of the lyrics instead of calling other peoples interpretations pathetic and stupid.

"The smiler with the knife" is from Chaucer, so it pops up all over the place. I'm not sure the first thing that comes up on Google is necessarily the answer. It's also a film by Barbet Schroeder, crops up in a Robert Louis Stephenson poem and there are a few songs written before Morrissey's with similar titles.

George Mackay Brown (poet) used the phrase "smiler with the knife" as a euphemism for drink in a 1965 letter to his girlfriend, who later drank herself to death. Punch me in the face if you like, but I'd put my money on that as the influence.

Yes i have theory and its very simple you just need to read the lyrics, you dont have to build psychological theories just read the lyrics.Yeah Morrissey is gay and so what, one of my best friends is also gay and??Im just suprised that after this interview with Bilboard magazine where Morrissey says he is annoyed that now every song has to be about sex,sex people still try and look for hidden sexual meanings. For me this song is about death, and only about death.
