2hr 7min tape recording of a delightful Morrissey interview, conducted by Glasgow '80s boy Steven Daly {ex-drummer of Orange Juice} turned features writer at "SPIN" magazine.
Location ~ Beech Mount, Altrincham, January 1991. With Jo Slee pottering about with tea in the wings.
Published in the April 1991 issue, to promote the "Kill Uncle" album.

Topics covered/avoided ~
- reluctance to discuss song meanings
- nature of song writing

- Burchill and change in music criticism
- "Sing Your Life" {Daly had been given a pre-release unmixed version}

Starts off slowly, but it warms up with time and tea. í think Morrissey's innate attraction to drummers and Scotsmen {"I've been to Easterhouse! "} comes through in the end.

Here is how it appeared three months later, in print. The contents page of that issue listed it as the "interview Morrissey's lawyers tried to ban" and "his most controversial interview yet"... ???

Cocteau Twins made some of the most beautiful music ever. I agree with Moz about their interviews though. Some bands should keep their mystique.

I never got the Cocteau Twins much either. My ex boyfriend used to play them on his gazillion dollar sound system.

Thank you so much for sharing this ❤

Thanks Joe :thumb:

Would love to hear that rough mix of Kill Uncle that Steven Daly received before
doing this interview, he described it, or at least Sing Your Life as minimal.

Below just one of the episodes of Maude,
I’m guessing only 6 episodes were ever shown in Britain ?

Here’s one of the intro theme songs to the American sitcom Give Me A Break that Morrissey watched and thought was funny, I remember it too ....

Here’s the Prefab Sprout single he liked ....

I’d post some Cocteau Twins, but Morrissey said they make him vomit!

Those sitcoms are so 80s!!!!

He mentioned All in the family, but I wonder what he thought of it.

Who knows! He didn't mention the British version.

In the audio there were several points were the conversation could have got him in trouble - there's two references to black women & he's asked about platforms/rut & not even a flicker of having an issue with skin colour despite his wee whinge about English culture being gone (maybe he was just watching too many American sitcoms).

I really think he's been done wrong.

Post away, he has no taste. Cocteau Twins were amazing.

This is my favourite.

(And some early 90s Drew Barrymore doesn't hurt either )

Funny how Jasper Fink-Nottle over at Rock's Back Passage failed to hear any of that. Surely if Moz were such a wancid wacist it would come screaming out during those exchanges...?

And John Major eh? It's always the quiet ones, they say...

.

He's so, so wrong about the Cocteau Twins, bless him!

This is the stand-out quote, for me: "At all cost, however I'm displayed, it must be me and how I am. Once again, it must be strictly on my own terms." It's a blessing and a curse, this obsession of his.

Exactly!

The thing about Moz is that he doesn't stay 'on message' & he's interested in the mixed feelings that he has - most journalism goes for one angle.

They could easily have edited that to make it seem like he'd said Thatcher was a phenomenon & he agreed with her & if he hadn't so vocally hated her previously it would be on his list of word crimes.

.

Also - now I understand Moz's Farage comment & why he's so confused & aggrieved about why he gets linked to him.

It seemed odd to say he didn't support him & then say he'd make a good PM & then go on to slag all PMs - but he doesn't mean morally good or with good policies - he means not bland, someone who gets talked about.
