"Sad Boy Icon Morrissey Has a Vegas Residency, and I Have a Problem With It" - Dallas Observer article

A rather strange article here, in the Dallas Observer, by a writer (and fan) who's upset about Morrissey playing Vegas this summer:

Sad Boy Icon Morrissey Has a Vegas Residency, and I Have a Problem With It - Dallas Observer
By Diamond Rodrigue

Sample from the piece:

And as if the whole idea of Moz — who once said, “I have an unswayable obsession with death. If there was a magical pill that one could take that would retire you from the world, I would take it” — singing his sad music in a Vegas casino wasn’t weird enough, the promotional photo for the event sees him in a very Elvis-like, buttoned-way-down collared white shirt. Did I mention yet that the event’s name is Viva Moz Vegas?

Sigh.

We're all different, of course, but it's pretty obvious that Morrissey would get a kick out of a Vegas residency, no? (Both financially and psychologically.) The 1980s were a very, very long time ago...

I always thought that ‘magical pill’ that many sad humans take was called Las Vegas?

VIVA MOZ !!!

It’s weird that he thinks morrissey doesn’t really want to do an Elvis and play Vegas in a sequenced jump suit. People are so much more uptight about morrisseys image than he ever was especially now. Also good lord the mans like sixty and he’s still being held to things he said forever ago. That deserves a big sigh imo

As if him playing Vegas is such a big deal - he has done so before. Multiple times. Sometimes wearing a black pleather Elvis-suit. His Elvis-obsession is hardly breaking news. The first time he obviously tried to imitate him in a promotional picture was in 1987, so I'm not quite sure what the author is on about.

Also, calling him an "80s sad boy" in 2020 is appalling.

Has the writer not noticed that Moz loves LARPing as a faded or fading pop singer/crooner who was working the circuit in the 1960s?

It ties in with his love of Drag Queens. They do the same kind of sincere parody.

I also wonder if he's interested in Phil Ochs, a folk singer who tried to be Elvis in his gold suit era & who got so viciously turned on by his audience that he fell into despair & died.

I think the olds expect him to behave like a normal Indie band & keep reminding them of their youth. Like the lead singer of The Charlatans, with his terrifying hair.

Uhm, he covered Phil Ochs' song Days Of Decision on California Son so it's save to assume that he has some interest in him.

I believe that half the things Morrissey says and does these days is done in order to rid himself of an image he no longer feels to be.

Anyway, the writer of this article obviously doesn’t know much. I mean,
I’m sure he’s been wanting to do a residency in Vegas for a while.

I think so. I keep seeing people lamenting that in the early 80s he was a 'new vision of masculinity' & how sad it is that he started hanging out with skinheads & then became a gammon.

But I go back & check his publicity from the time & it's all about what a twat he is & how girly he is. Which must have hurt esp. as it was a time when the gay community became very focused on being 'straight-acting' & a lot of the old camp stars were being denounced for giving gay men a bad image.

Apart from a brief moment in about 2004 when everyone pretended he was vaguely normal - he's always been a square peg in a round hole.

I agree let that the urge to do something different as you get older must grow until it becomes overwhelming and that being trapped in several different past versions of yourself must exacerbate this to a degree I can’t imagine. I went to a soul asylum show the other day and while the band has made more music that I love after they got famous and played a bunch of new songs I still noticed that the band or at least the star singer was in fake stage clothes tailored to the bands hey day image. I understand the concession but I do admire that morrissey hasn’t made to many of them. That he’s avoided the need or incentives that being a reminder of his audiences youth could bring him

Morrissey loves Elvis Presley and of course would be flattered to be compared to him. Two iconic performers, Elvis slayed Vegas for years before it wore him down. Moz will thrive in a short residency

Who cares if this person has a problem with it? It's just a gig in a place. If I was in Vegas I'd see him in Vegas, if I was in Malmo, I'd see him in Malmo. Its a residency where he'll play gigs like any other gig. And if changing a song by adding a word or two changes your entire experience of a concert then ... that's a sensitive 'you problem'.

Since we're talking about Moz's image, I will shoehorn in a comment about political twitter. It's AFLAME with a row about a Guardian article basically accusing all non-Muslim Indians who are Tories of being Islamophobes. 'f*** The Guardian' is becoming a popular sentiment.

I'm not watching Moz's sales in the UK, but I wouldn't be worried whatever they are, because all he really needs to do, is keep going, work on his songs, try to get some positive publicity about something personal (like his health, or love of gardening - anything) & wait while all his enemies get slayed by themselves.

He will be vindicated. (not about Anne-Marie, but she'll be lucky to get an entry in Brewer's Dictionary of Rogues, Villains & Eccentrics).

I agree. The 80s were a long time ago and Morrissey changes like everyone. I think he's having fun now to a limited degree. :)

Exactly. If he has a problem then just don't go. These people think the universe revolves around them. The only thing that revolves around him is the swirl of water flushing him down the toilet with the other snowflake turds.

It's not a real Vegas residency to me just as his Broadway shows were not a residency.

Celine Dion, according to wikipedia, had a residency at the same venue. She did 70 shows in 2011. Over 9 years she has done over 400 shows there. That is a true residency. Morrissey is stopping by for a visit.

As far as the author goes, if he can make money peddling lame ass shit like "Sad Boy Icon" then Morrissey has a right to play a handful of shows in a city know for its live performances.

To be fair, I didn't read the article. I didn't feel like wiping my ass with my laptop afterwards.

Stop by The Flamingo while ya in town!
Come and check Wild T Turkey Steppin' with the Turkettes!
The buffet will be veggie durin' my residency!

$1,500 plus charges for a front row seat.

I beg your pardon?
The touts have every ticket that’s been sold. That’s the only reason ANY have been sold.

They’re expecting big things from the 14 basement dwelling felchers on here to pony up for the plane-ride and lodgings.

Not gonna happen, is it?

The quarter-sold room (FACT - check the available seating) will be filled with bored gamblers on a voucher. ...and they’ll quickly realize that Morrissey is no Pat Boone, when it comes to showmanship.

Has he sorted a Smiths medley yet? He’d better get on it. The band aren’t exactly stellar and the Vegas crowd can be quite demanding. They won’t stand for half-assed. ...especially those in the wheel-chair rows.
