Anyone here into this band? What album would you state is their most definitive?

I'm currently in the process of researching & saving funds for a trip to Australia in the upcoming 2-3 years. That's a personal goal I have. I have wanted to visit Australia since I was a kid so, I'm hoping I'm able to obtain my goal. I've recently started a vacation club & have researched places/maps there already. They would be my biggest influencer of a positive reason to visit the country, besides the terrific geographic content (like the country of Iceland for which I visited already twice).

I have all but a few of their albums, been collecting since the 80's. I'm currently working to get the rest. They are totally, totally underrated yet, that's my opinion. I mean, look at their releases (either w/ the band or solo).

My favorite gig of theirs I've seen was 8/11/06 at the Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, PA. Intimate, casual yet, emotional & powerful...loved it!

They have new material coming out too, can't wait. Hope they come back here to the East!

Yes, they're a great band. I love all of their 1980s output, especially The Blurred Crusade, Remote Luxury and Heyday. I'd say those are their quintessential records. Their best recent material would be 2002's After Everything Now This IMO.

Do you know The Triffids though? I'd say they're an even better Australian band, their records Born Sandy Devotional (1986) and Calenture (1987) are the best Australian albums ever.

Hi,

Yes, I've heard of them. Another Aussie is the Newsboys. I met them in my old hometown in 1991! lol

What did you think of The Church's, Forget Yourself? I am currently listening to that album quite an awful lot of time now. My favorite tracks on there are: Telepath, Appalatia & Summer. I can't stop, actually. lol When I listen to these songs, it's just immensive.

However, if I'm all honest, I've been going back in their discography & listening to a few early tracks. I am really enjoying: Tear it all Away, When You Were Mine, Feel....

What do you think? If you feel like talking more about them, feel free to PM me.

I have yet to find the "official" forum on this band too so, any suggestions, let me know. :)

Both great bands mentioned above, as for The Church I've just got 'Uninvited Like The Clouds' and a compilation called 'Deep In The Shallows'.

Another great Aussie band that went under the radar were 'The Moles'

Here's an mpfree if you want it, 'this is a happy garden', great song..sounding a bit 'Talk Talk' here.

Hey,

Thanks for this information. Deep in the Shallows is awesome. I even have the tag on my copy as stating Made in Australia.

I don't know if you or Johan de Wit noticed on that link I posted but, Mr. Kilbey is doing a set of gigs right shortly. I'm hoping that this will lead to a full tour including here in the US.

Speaking of Aussies: Aren't Mercury Rev from there & Talk Talk? I need to check compiliations too on The Church's site. There's some goodies there (under compiliations I should state).

Steve Kilbey is one of the most underrated songwriters of the rock era IMO. He's very prolific, both with The Church and various side-projects, yet the quality of his writing remains inexplicably high.

My personal favourites in The Church canon are Starfish and Heyday (that's the one with the screaming paisley cover). I've also enjoyed Gold Afternoon Fix, and still listen to Priest = Aura.

You really can't go wrong with any of their more recent albums either though: as mentioned above, After Everything Now This; Forget Yourself; and Uninvited, like the Clouds.

Have you checked out the 1991 eponymous Jack Frost album that Kilbey did with Grant McLennan of the Go- Betweens? There are some great songs on there, especially "Every Hour God Sends" and "Providence".

Hi,

Thank you for telling me this information. You're certainly correct in your opinions as I'm in agreement w/in them regarding not only Steve Kilbey's writing prolifically but also, Marty Willson-Piper's musical abilities. (Not to mention the side project of Pete Koppes too).

Have you ever checked out Marty Willson-Piper's side projects too?

According to their main (the band's) website, there's a marketplace listing of these yet, if you do more searching, you can find them on other sites. I did.

When I saw them at my favorite gig of theirs on 8/11/06, I have to say that that's fully when I experienced their true talents not to mention their humble prolifications. I am not stating brown-nosing opinions though, these are strictly from their creative endeavors as evidenced by their number of works.

Thanks for your opinions, again.

I found the complete discography for their complete albums (not including compiliations & mini-albums) so, was just asking & wondering here....

What would you consider their most definitive? Just asking your friendly opinion, as imposing a spirit of friendliness...

What do you people think of Seance?

Mozzy1, the gig you saw in 2006, was it acoustic?

I've never seen them play live, sadly. Hopefully they'll continue to tour and record for many years to come. Reading Kilbey's occasional blog postings, I understand their situation - his in particular - is difficult in its financial constraints.

Seance - that's an early one. I remember "It's No Reason" and "Electric Lash" as being the stand-outs, but it's been a long time since I've heard the whole album.

The definitive album: my opinion would be Starfish. I doubt the band would agree though! I think they thought it was too commercial. They have funny/conflicted attitudes about success though (my impression).

Mozzy1-
I was at the Sellersville show too, and it is one of my all-time favorite gigs...the venue was intimate, the sound was near perfect, the band were in a great mood, Rob Dickinson opened (and although he was sick, he was a trooper) the setlist was amazing etc etc.
Their discography, if you include their solo stuff, is huge. Most would say Starfish is the way to go. Not a bum track on that one if you ask me. Yes, it includes their "one hit wonder", but it's a great song. The rockers on there are some of their best, with Reptile & NSEW being some of my faves.
The beauty of the Church is their range. They have some of the most beautiful music you could possibly come up with(Day 5, 0408, June, It's No Reason, Song In The Afternoon to name a few gems), but can turn around and do their "Church" magic like nobody else can(Aura, Radiance, Cantilever, Invisible).

I got into them again after a friend of mine worked for eMusic and gave me like 1500 free downloads. eMusic has a huge selection of Church albums. I was blown away after not buying anything of theirs for years (since Gold Afternoon Fix) how bloody good Forget Yourself, Uninvited and After Everything were. Awesome, awesome band.

Are you going to the Australia Zoo? Are you driving around there? Are you going to go to the Sydney Oprah House?

Hi,

Yes it was sort-of acoustic. I seen them before at the Trocadero but, that gig was in promotion of Forget Yourself. It was a very "slow" gig, if you can understand what I mean?

That theater, Sellersville, is a great place b/c of its intimacy. They have even tables at the front, resembling a bar area.

I believe you're right about your choice for their most definitive album b/c of that commercialism yet, to each their own...

Hi!

Where did you sit? Were you a member where you got to sit at the tables? What did you think of Kilbey talking about Pantaloons? lol

Are you going to the Australia Zoo? Are you driving around there? Are you going to go to the Sydney Oprah House?

I hope to do the zoo & find a local aquarium. I have friends in Brisbane & Melbourne therefore, I hope get to those areas. I don't even mind if I don't actually "visit" the opera house, just getting a photograph of it live would be suffice for me. (I'm easy to please)

A friend of mine agreed to come w/ me so that, there won't be any difficulties upon travelling alone. Therefore, most likely, he'll be the one driving. I mean, I would drive but, nothing beats not having to drive & taking in the scenes....It's a real positive blessing really that, I have a good friend willing to travel w/ me to do this.

I have been wanting to go to this country for a long time but, it's finally the time to actually obtain this dream & goal.

Are you from there or have you ever been there? What places could you recommend in Melbourne & Brisbane too, if you're either from or been there? I know my friends would show me around but, I guess I'm talking for free-time.

Metropolis is one of the greatest songs of all time.
