Unsung

" Mavis Nicholson is, or was - or is still the best television interviewer from these isles. She broadcast the most
compelling TV interviews with James Baldwin, Kenneth Williams, Bette Davis, Nina Simone, Germaine Greer,
David Bowie … but somehow had only an afternoon transmission - never evening, unlike most of the traditionally sexist
male interviewers. I was lucky enough to be interviewed by her in, I think 1991, when she came to visit me with a
small crew of technicians. I was so much in awe of Mavis … her humanity, her ease, her intellect … that I typically
completely messed it all up. I didn't think I was ready for such an important interview … I didn't think I was "me" yet,
and I rattled on so much about self-destruction and the inevitability of suicide that I later asked Mavis not to air our
conversation. She agreed not to … probably thinking it to be just too much. I often wonder where those tapes
ended up. On a skip, perhaps. But nonetheless, her very impressive interviews ought to be either re-shown or
made available on DVD because they are absolutely a vital study of how to get the best out of the subject … no
sex jokes, no fake and intrusive audience laughter, no loud or lavish sets … just a very classy connection requiring
nothing but gentle charm and the power of words." Morrissey, December 2020.

Omg! You said it wasn't my fault! This is outrageous.

Well, they never did explain to me what caused it. "A man of mystery" í am.

They thought Covid infection, post-Covid infection, bad reaction to {legal} meds...í asked them 'could it be cos í drink too much Red Bull?' to which my consultant laughed and said 'Who doesn't?'

í never asked her 'could it be too much Frink...?' {í can't think why}. So, it's an open verdict at this stage.

Be gentle with me. That's all í'm saying.

í am going to just pretend that í never read this.

"Mo***n R***e" is, on balance, the single worst feature film í have ever had the misfortune to see in a cinema.

It should have been perfect. í went to see it in the now-deceased Zeigfeld Theater in mid-town Manhattan back in summer 2001. A plush picture palace of sumptuous flock velvet gilt-edged gold and maroon finery, it was designed for a film like this. í had loved, and still love, Luhrmann's "William Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet". The auditorium was packed with what appeared to be every gay man in New York City, or mid-town at least. This is gonna be grrreat, í think. Wrong.

By the end of the second reel, í was reduced to studying the fixtures & fittings of the interior of the Zeigfeld rather than looking at the screeching car crash on the screen. It was like being trapped in a small elevator with the world's loudest, most annoying fake queen for over 2 hours. Even the gay crowd were rattled. By half-way through there was a slowly growing chorus of 'tsk tsk', blooming quickly in to many a 'Jeeezus...are you kiddin?' By Kylie-time, people were openly clucking their studded tongues. There were more than a few walk outs. í would have done the same, but í had chosen a centre seat and didn't fancy running the grabbers gauntlet in order to escape. Although, if í had, at least í would have got some pleasure from the night..?

í remember wishing í could have put the 'reviews' í overheard in the gents afterward on the posters outside.

í loved the red velvet circular banquette very much though.

But, hey, enjoy your Saturday night! :thumb:

A great review of a show/ film that I have ever seen, have no intention of ever seeing either...
Your wasted on here young Joe

Just blame Morrissey. Everyone does.

Whatever it was, I hope it doesn't make a comeback. You survived the November Spawned A Monster rerun unscathed, so there's still hope.

(It's the Red Bull, Joe.)

Oh yes, watched GOATOTP many times, and nary a flicker.

í think you are probably right, and my stay in hospital gave me a good opportunity to go cold turkey. í am now 9 weeks straight, and over the shakes & migraines. The pink elephants are still there though...

O god, that f***ing elephant. Mine are much nicer. And don't break out in song. Yet.

Meanwhile, back to Mavis...

Stick this in your Saturday night mix of hellish musicals and spreadsheets. Chill out with Arthur...

Delightful interview. Mavis has a great laugh.
Arthur's post office crisis must have seemed pretty familiar to Morrissey...

Seeing them stroll about Arthur's garden makes me miss days of sunshine...

"And in the afternoon I snooze..."

Drinking about this MC post over the last couple of days, and this is kinda, sorta why í, in spite of all, í luv Moz yet.

Other 'alternative' legends of his vintage have their carefully curated coffee-table classy socials offering 'unique' art Polaroids of porno prayer cards Etc {£100? ~ Hello N. Cave} and wise words on the woes of the day...

Morrissey?... offers us a lovely living eulogy of a daytime telly interviewer most people have never heard of, who he once nixed an interview with 29-ish years ago and now feels a bit bad about.

“You’re as happy as a lark [...] true or false”.
It’s the only question an interviewer really need ask.

Perhaps that was where Mavis banjaxed it with Morrissey back in '1991'?

A lark descending...
