Why are the Morrissey-friendly UK radio stations not playing his new songs?

Record companies don't have a magic wand. They can't force radio stations to playlist songs.
The issue really is why the stations are not playing them. Is it because three in three weeks is an odd and confusing strategy?
Or is it one of the other reasons previously mentioned?

So the fact that Justin Bieber gets endless airplay as opposed to say the local unsigned indie band down the street is pure coincidence?

Well, he's finally had a play on Absolute (big commercial 'proper' music station here in the UK).
Only one mind, and I'm guessing it was on the Geoff Lloyd show (Smiths-loving indie bloke).
Istanbul was played. Would be brilliant if they stuck it on their playlist proper.
Can't believe XfM haven't played any of the new songs once. Conspiracy, anyone?

The Radio 2 breakfast show gets 8 million listeners a day. Nobody listens?
Radio 2 has a big influence in the uk ... i still work for hmv ... yes we are , yes they do ... and we see massive jumps in sales when stuff is heavily featured on chris evans show ... jazz singer gregory porter was on about 3 weeks back and we sold out the next day... so dont underestimate radio influence ... saying that i dont think any of the tracks have been played on his show so far. Moz needs to get himself on some chat shows in uk once the us dates are done ... one show , alan carr , rossy . I have tried via boz to see if we can get some instore signings when it is released , but got a polite reply of "not my department.. sorry , try virgin uk " . A select few signings around uk would create a buzz on week of release methinks... but what do i know

Good points.

1. I'm confused by promoting the album with a US tour. Why not start in the UK?

2. Are the three songs the singles to promote the album? If so, the album doesn't drop until mid-July, and they have been released in quick succession. The logic escapes me.

3. I quite like the spoken word videos. In retrospect, had they been released to coincide with coordinated media appearances, radio play, physical product with b-sides, and AN ACTUAL ALBUM one could purchase, I believe they would've helped. From everything I've read, they've gotten positive feedback from most music related mags/blogs, but what are they really promoting? The download of a single track? The pre-order of the album?

4. The first single served to alert the usual suspects (me included) to pre-order the new album, but did Harvest really believe they would move the meter on sales beyond his fan base? What happens when the album does drop? There won't be a single to promote it? Bizarre.

5. I quite like WPINOYB (especially your edit) and I go out on a limb and say Istanbul is a great Morrissey track.

Just my two cents. Thanks again for the fast fan edit. Love it.

Vauxhall95 , your point number 2 is spot on. It is all very confusing .....

Cheers Moz

I am also confused at the lack of interviews and TV appearances.

Well, XfM have (finally) announced they are about to play the new Morrissey single, Istanbul.
They are the indiest station in the land, and it's bizarre that they've not played any of the new songs once.
Oh, here it comes - presenter has described it - "Beautiful chaos to it, a really well-written song"

Are these 'singles' even singles or merely just songs being released each week building up to album release date. The availability of those songs seems to exist just to build up pre-orders of the album. I don't imagine Morrissey can get airplay on U.S. radio anymore, not sure how U.K. radio works but other than mainstream pop you either buy the song or listen on Spotify, etal...

Yeah, I'm equally confused. Up until EITLP, I would have wagered that these are the album singles.

I agree that radio airplay in the US seems unlikely, which is why I don't understand why there wasn't a more traditional roll out in the UK with a supporting tour, media appearances, and the like.

Prior to hearing the new tracks, I assumed this would be his final album. I've been pleasantly surprised by the new tracks. They are light years more vibrant than People Are the Same Everywhere and The Kids a Looker. I swear every time I count him down and out he seemingly revitalizes his career.

Whatever the situation, I'm enjoying Constantinople (err Istanbul) and WPINOYB. I'm looking forward to the album, and I hope we might get a proper studio cut of Action is My Middle Name as a bside.

I've removed the fatwa regarding his comments on David Banda so not much I can do on this one. Others are still very, very angry with him for some of his outbursts as it adds a toxic energy around his songs which makes people pause before adding the new ones to a playlist, even though they're top notch.

I'm sure if he moderated his outbursts and dropped some of the wilder provocations he'd be re-habilitated in a flash. But I wouldn't invite him to a dinner party, not because of his views, but because he increasingly comes across as an opinionated crashing bore who cannot listen to other perspectives. Fascinating guests make any soiree swing, but there's a line where people get indigestion and say "I'll get me coat" to escape an annoying windbag.

Nobody is going to play a track called "Kick The Bride Down The Aisle" as it's jumped the shark into dog pound dodgy territory. I wouldn't want to introduce that song on air and I'm sure my friends Smashey and Nicey wouldn't either, other than to lampoon him. I'll ask them though, next time I bump into them.

best wishes

Only really listen to 6Music and I have heard Istanbul played a few times.

But I do think its a pretty straight forward question to answer because 6 plays iconic music and new Indie music ( as well as the specialist shows), Morrissey's new stuff sounds just like all his other stuff, its just more of the same. I guess if Jarvis Cocker was currently doing Sunday Service, then the spoken word stuff might get a look, but that is very niche listening.

What they will regularly play is The Smiths, and less regularly, the very few Morrissey songs that were any good.

I feel blessed to have so many great new artists to listen to, you cant blame 6 for not wanting to cooperate in the joint flogging of Morrissey's dead & manic depressed horse.

 this is punch below the belt

you know him personally? this is rhetorical question.

p.s. apologies

Well, the new playlists for next week have been announced, and he's finally gone onto 6 Music's (A list) and XfM's (daytime list).
This means all the indie kids will get to hear the single (Istanbul).
He's not been put onto Radio 2's which is a surprise as all his recent pre-album singles have been A listed including dreary stuff like Paris, Grow Up, and YHKM.
He'll need Radio 2 and Absolute Radionsupport for the album to sell in Quarry-esque numbers. Maybe there's a brilliant single that's being held back but probably wishful thinking...

I think the post on the first page mentioning attracting 'floating voters' has it spot on - while Morrissey is still vital to (some of) us, the sad fact is to many casual observers/listeners they'll be rolling their eyes when they hear '...the latest single from Morrissey'.

For an album to sell well, to the much fabled Quarry standards at least, you would need a shedload of those casual listeners to be on board and the radio can still help that process. I'm not sure whether fans should be particularly arsed about sales and we know sales don't reflect an album's quality.

The main concern is it leading onto another album or being dropped. Not to mention the man himself's considerable ego that'll take a hammering if it doesn't chart within the top 10.

Istanbul has finally been added to the Radio 2 playlist. Radio 2 is the most popular station in the UK so this will make a fair difference.
It's only been put on their c-list but may climb to A or B nearer the album release date.

Good news, folks.
Istanbul has been added to the Absolute Radio playlist.
This is a big deal. They are extremely cautious about playing contemporary Morrissey songs.
I don't think they've play-listed any of his singles since FOTGTD.
They're a mainstream commercial station, so this can only boost the first week sales of the album, giving Moz a greater chance of a number 1.
