From Andy-Mats:

Found this review of Morrissey's Coachella performance at spin.com. They also have a couple of pictures. One of Moz sans shirt and another of a Moz fan. Excerpt:

One out of every three or four fans on day one were sporting Morrissey or Smiths T-shirts. Although Beck was the event's headliner, the Mozzer, who canceled his rare engagement at the House of Blues in Las Vegas just two days earlier, was the hands down crowd favorite. While Perry Farrell (a bizarre solo set complete with costumed dancers and a drum'n'bass Led Zeppelin cover), acid jazz collective Medeski, Martin and Wood, human beat box Rahzel, and DJ Shadow turned in crowd-pleasing sets under the hot, desert sun (temperatures exceeded 100 degrees on both days), the crowd was there for one reason.

As the sun began to set, the tents and concession stands emptied, and the field in front of the main stage filled with eager, loyal fans (a large percentage of which were representing the Mozzer's sizeable Chicano following; quiffed hair, cuffed blue jeans, classic cars out in the massive lot). Up until the moment DJ Liquid Todd put away his vinyl after warming up the main stage (a smart between set novelty that helped quell crowd tension and impatience) and the lights turned a dramatic blue, it was unclear whether or not Morrissey would play at all. When he finally took the stage, the 40-year old icon didn't disappoint his worshippers despite a muddy sound system and the absence of former creative partner Johnny Marr, who was rumored to be at the show as part of Beck's band. Despite Marr's absence, Morrissey resurrected three Smiths classics (by far the most he's ever performed solo), "Is It Really So Strange," "Meat is Murder," and the encore "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me."

Comments / Notes

this article was pretty acurate as far as the true description of the show and the awe created, the anticipation which was amplified by the dj playing before his set made me feel like belting "Hang the dj, Hang the dj" just so Moz could step out sooner; the sound quality of the guitars and bass could've used a few more minutes at the sound check, but nothing was at all disappointing about Moz's performance- lovely, absolutely lovely. thank you Morrissey, "in my own sick way, I've always been true to you"

well one thing is not true. three smiths songs is not by far the most he has performed solo. in 97 he did "london", "paint a vulgar picture", and "shoplifters.." in atlanta and raleigh. i'm not sure what all smiths stuff he did on the rest of the tour though.

beefcake? meatloaf is a beefcake, van morrisson, missy misdemeanor elliot (you know, the rapping PIG) is a beefcake. Moz isn't as slim as he once was, but he just looks like a normal person with normal weight: he isn't sporting a beergut or anything... what's all the fuss about?

Sunny Jim - round our way 'beefcake' is a colloquialism for a hunk or well toned and defined male specimen, which Morrissey undoubtedly is. As to your referring to Missy Elliot as a 'pig', I suggest you visit your nearest farm yard and enquire as to whether they've reared any sows capable of writing and producing two of the most interesting, innovative rap albums ever made, nurturing the talent of other up and coming stars, owning her own record company, becoming a multi-millionaire, while challenging and subverting the gangsta rap misogyny of many of the hip hop world's leading lights. I think you'll find the farm hand may have difficulty in recognising these swine-like characteristics. Not only is your remark size-ist, it's extremely sexist.

Missy 'Misdemeanour' Elliot. She may be 'a bitch', but she ain't no pig.

if missy elliot is a musical genius, than so is 'oinky', the pig living on the nearest farm... as abou your sexism remark: i don't think i'm insulting your rap godess, but i am in fact insulting the pig here, by comparing it to HER.

Your lack of intelligence is an insult to both pig and pop star.

Yes, yes, down our way beefcake is a good thing. It does not mean beefy. It means sexy. So don't get your panties in a bunch!

I may be biased, as Missy is homegrown talent, but i think she is a fairly remarkable talent. The fact that her talent lies in belting out material that is perhaps a bit overly commercial and predictable does not necessarily detract from her skills. Regardless, her weight and appearance seem an unfortunate choice of attributes for you to speak upon.

i FELT THAT THE CONCERT WAS A TRUE TEST OF WHAT MOZ IS CAPABLE OF DOING IN ANY CONCERT. a HUGE FOLLOWING IS ALWAYS BEHIND HIM.IT SEEMED TO ME THAT THE GROWING NUMBER OF FANS ARE SHOWING THAT HIS POPULARITY FOR HIS BEUTIFUL LYRICS AND MUSIC SHOWS THAT THE TEST IS A GOOD ONE. i FEEL THAT MOZ IS STILL NOT GETTING THE FULL RESPECT HE DESERVES, HE PRACTICLEY FILLS UP ACERS OF PEOPLE IN A HOT SCORCHING FIELD AND MANY OF THEM LOYAL FANS NEVER LEFT THE MAIN STAGE THREW MANY DISAPIONTING ACTS EXCEPT FOR BECKS, AND THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS HIS WAS A VERY GOOD ONE, AND YET HE STILL ISNT MENTIONED IN MANY OF THE NEWS PAPERS OR IN THE NEWS. bUT THATS FINE HE STILL PROVES TO US THAT THE MEDIA HAS NO EFFECT ON HIM AND HIS FOLLOWING. wHERE HE GOES WE GO.THE CONCERT BELONGED TO HIM.
