Morrissey’s voice change?

I have recently noticed how vastly different Morrissey’s voice sounds when you compare more recent songs to older ones. To me it seems his voice is a bit scratchy-er or something. If anyone has any answers as to what made his voice sound different, that would be helpful since this has been one of my lingering questions.

The vocals for that particular record were sang through a colander, hence the voice sounding strained.

He is aging... and not just physical looks change.. but nearly everything inside and outside of the body does. (Or so I've been told.) So.. maybe that?
