Bleakest Morrissey/Smiths track?

"Southpaw" is quite heart-wrenching also.

surprided nobody mentioned" last night i dreamt that somebody loved me"
yet

rings so true

Warm lights from the grand houses blind me
Haves cannot stand Have-nots
And my love is under the ground
My one true love is under the ground
And I’ll never be
I’ll never be
I’ll never be anybody’s hero now
I’ll never be
I’ll never be
I’ll never be anybody’s hero now
They who should love me
Walk right through me
I am a ghost
And as far as I know I haven’t even died
And my love is under the ground
My one true love is under the ground
And I’ll never be
I’ll never be
I’ll never be anybody’s hero now
I’ll never be
I’ll never be
I’ll never be anybody’s hero now
See as I.. See as I.. See as I..
I’ll never be
I’ll never be
I’ll never be anybody’s lover now
I’ll never be
I’ll never be
I’ll never be anybody’s lover now
Things I’ve heard and I’ve seen
And I’ve felt and I’ve been
Tell me I’ll never be anybody’s lover now
It begins in the heart
And it hurts when it’s true
It only hurts because it’s true.

Did people fail to think of 'Well I Wonder'? That's the bleakest song by far, But clearly one of the top 5 Smiths songs.
Solowise 'I know Very Well How I Got My Name' doesn't paint the happiest of pictures.

Now I Am A Was

Once I was complete and
Safe within your heart
Me - with a preference for
Making things worse..

So, now I am a was
Now I am a was
I started at the top
And I worked my way down

Once I was so smugly
Foremost in your thoughts
Me - with a talent for
Making you cry

Aww but this is such a peppy poppy song :o :D

Michael's Bones, Late Night Maudlin Street, The Harsh Truth Of The Camera Eye, Asleep, Well I Wonder.

I don't think anyone mentioned this, but the one that gets me is 'Accept Yourself'.
I am sick and I am dull
And I am plain
How dearly I’d love to get carried away
Oh, but dreams have a knack of just not coming true
And time is against me now.
:tears:

Seasick Yet Still Docked.......musically its streets ahead, EVEN of the most bleak Smiths tracks in my humble opinion.

Asleep, no question about it!
Cheers Moz

Smiths: Jeanne. It is about total poverty and despair.
Morrissey: Something is Squeezing Me Skull. Well, it can't get much more personal than that!

Well many have been mentioned - I know it's over, Seasick, Maudlin Street, Asleep... but one that really gets me is I'd Love To. I get very upset with that one. Reminds me a particular someone. I only need to hear the opening music and I sometimes have to switch it off. I think it's the sound of exhaustion in the whispery vocals even more so than the actual words that makes it feel so bleak.

I'd forgotten this one! :tears:

It's one of my faves...as you know.;)I'd love to know Moz's interpretation of it.To me it sounds Gothic.

The bleakest lyrics would have to be November...but I find musically it to be really uplifting.

Yes, Hellie. I do know :)

To me, INBAHN does have a Gothic quality, almost operatic, especially the way in which his voice strains with the use of falsetto & vibrato in the last section. It's almost like an aria. Perhaps the Italian influence. And the music arrives out of nowhere and disappears in the same way. Awesome, as our American friends would say.

I grew tired of November..
