Interview with AYNIM video director + Challenge to fans

King Leer

Leering since '97
A short but interesting interview with Patrick O'Dell, director of the vid for All You Need...

Turns out they sent him a link to a Youtube video to pattern his video after, but he lost points with Moz for not knowing who the musician was.

Your challenge is to find out who the mystery singer is and provide a link to the clip! Maybe it provides the key to why so many Moz video clips have him lead the way while his band follows...

I haven't seen anyone post this before, but Patrick O'Dell's Web site has several photos captioned with Morrissey lyrics, including ones I didn't recognize because they look like they're from as-yet-unreleased songs ("you were good in your time"):

oceans apart

I would never be you

strange victory, strange defeat

open field with the window

Jerry's chillaxing contribution

my sentimental heart hardens

kick the shit out of very frightened children

wake up without thinking you're the one that I desired

what was not but could have been was my obsession way back when

what is not but could be if

baby don't be looking in my mind

I could list the details of everything you ever wore or said, or how you stood

fate has just handed you to me (ed.: you?)

who've brain-washed the small shy boy inside?

I've got my mobile phone full of silicon chips

do you happen to know where I am from?

I don't try much but I guess it will do

I’m sick to death of seeing things from tight-lipped, condescending, mama’s little chauvinists

there's something i've got to tell you

I never really realized death is what it meant to make it on my own

I can live fine without love

good friday, midnight birthday

still drinking on the corner, just don't say I didn't warn ya

under the bushes, under the stars

they laugh `cause they know they're untouchable, not because what I say is wrong (ed: :guitar:)

you make me empty and lean for another page in a magazine

i've got absolutely no one, no one but myself to blame

because we must

I think of demons, they never kill

everyone was dancing, I stood over in the corner, I was listening, they were saying this and saying that

I couldn't believe after all these years, you didn't know me better than that

the hearty spirit of America combined with the grit and grime of the city slime

why would you pay to see me in a cage?

there is nothing I could tell you that will ever make a change about you

he is too good to be true, he is set to self-destruct

Ben's show, Growing played, Meryl made the head

I'd rather play a different sort of game that the girls are just as good as boys at playing

will I snooze, snooze, snooze for eternity? If God lets me, I will

there is no love in modern life

bailiffs with bad breath, I will slit their throats for you

she's a hypnotist collector, you are a walking antique

when I am laid in earth, may my wrongs create no trouble in your breast

it's not your birthday anymore

you were good in your time

the longer I live

Can you believe the interviewer didn't ask which video was being referred to? He musn't have a curious bone in his entire body.

Well how about some educated guesses before just asking for the answer?

It's someone contemporary that O'Dell "should've" known for his age, and that his mum was aware of.

I admit -- I have no idea.

By the way, I didn't notice Mozmic Dancer's post linking to the same interview on the thread about the video.

I swear, the first time I did a search for "Vice" that thread didn't come up, but it does now. Gomen, Kewpie!

I see other lyrics I recognise from other artists "why would you pay to see me in a cage?" first one that jumped out at me. Mr P Doherty

Yeah, there's some Dylan in there ("I couldn't believe after all these years, you didn't know me better than that," "she's a hypnotist collector, you are a walking antique"), Lennon ("I’m sick to death of seeing things from tight-lipped, condescending, mama’s little chauvinists"), Sinead O'Connor, etc. There are other Morrissey lines that I missed, too--"there is no love in modern life." I don't have all the new songs memorized. :p

I'm not sure all the quotations are perfect ("there's something I've got to tell you"--"Come Back to Camden"?)

I've got my Guinness British Hit Singles out, and I won't stop till I've found the answer. Or go to sleep. Or give in.

i'm almost afraid to ask,
but...
what the hell is "pounding a beer"?

ummm ok...
not sure i believe you, besides Moz (no offence dear) doesnt have the stomach muscles to do that anymore... plus it seems like a very lager loutish thing to do... :(
*worries*

I tried and I failed. I've looked through the whole Guinness Book Of British Hit Singles. I probably missed the reference, but the only one I can think of when Patrick O'Dell said "That musician..." is Morrissey himself - Tomorrow?

I turned up a real close miss...

And during the course of trawling through the book, I picked up on a record I bought, but totally forgot about, but it's still wonderful...

Cheers,

Peter

Didn't, in that one article of the geezer who was to be Morrissey's assistant on the tour, or band assistant/gopher, claim Mogsy was downing beers quite heavily and beating Tobias about the head at some pub or restaurant?
