Can anyone help me. I am looking for somewhere
reasonably clean and tidy to stay in NYC - if anyone can offer tips or advice on decent hotels and apartments in early September - please help me !

The Essex hotel has reasonable prices and is a very nice place to stay if you don't want that "showbizzy glitz" NYC hotel's strive for. Give them a call, they're really nice.

And the staff bathes too!
