How many times I've saved myself
It occurred to me recently that the twisted child who is a hostage to the wheels underneath her, is walking by the end of the song.

I wonder if this sort of inconsistency bothers other people?

Maybe there is a simple and intended reason for this miraculous turn of events. Maybe like choosing her own clothes, Morrissey is saying the best she could hope for is to walk independently (even if that seems a remote possibility)

She isn't walking - it's something the narrator hopes will happen for her.
