Reel Around the Fountain

bored

not bitter but bored
I always thought that Reel in this case meant some kind of dance but I don't even know why I thought that. Just seemed to make sense in the context.

I found this on wikipedia and found it interesting.

"Reel Around the Fountain" is a term used by gay people...it means running your tongue around the tip of someone's penis until ejaculation occurs.

Reel around the fountain
slap me on the patio
I'll take it now
Fifteen minutes with you

as for the age of the other person involved...morrissey did say
"...loss of innocence, that until one has a physical commitment with another person, there's something childlike about the soul."

I've heard of that explanation before, but what's the derivation? I'd like to see some proof of this other than mischief-makers on websites.

A fountain is a water source. I thought the reel was real, that it was a reference to desiring to really be with "the source." Or a BJ, one and the same I guess.

I doubt that the phrase "Reel around the fountain" existed until Morrissey put pen to paper. If, since 1983, some people have started to use the phrase to refer to certain acts, then that's a different matter...

"Slap me on the patio" well, that's a different story all together....it's not the time to tell that tale yet :)

Yes, "Bee's Knees" can mean first class, excellent, top quality :)

I think that this is also a line taken fron A Taste of Honey "you're the Bee's knees, but so am I" http://www.oz.net/~moz/nicked.htm

Or it's reference to a very crafty devil. Beez's keen. Beezlebub. It's complicated. I'll shut up.

I really don't think it is a known saying as such and I've always assumed it was a clever phrase Morrissey came up with by himself. Given his penchant for sexual punning, and the lyrical content, there should be little doubt regarding the type of fountain he is reeling around...

There are George Formby songs called: "Rolling Round Piccadilly" and "Running Round The Fountain In Trafalgar Square" which may have provided some inspiration, possibly.

This is something that plays on my mind. Now when The Smiths were recording the songs, and of course morrissey had written the lyrics on his lonesome, what were the other lads thinking of the words? I mean 'the hand that rocks the cradle' sounds very controversial when you just hear it at face value without reading into the hidden meanings etc.... and of course 'reel around the fountain''. Did they think ''shit, these are some dangerous lyrics?'' Or are we as fans just not getting it quick enough?

Does anyone understand what I am getting at? hehe

I say weird things all the time and my friends and family just think, "Oh, Amie. You're strange."

I think maybe they didn't notice or became preoccupied with some other aspect of being musicians and famous and all.

I always took it to mean the sexual reference.

Also wondered if The Fountain could be the name of a pub, as it is in Pulp's 'Disco 2000'.
