Morrissey influenced new Blue October album, claims singer Justin Furstenfeld, 14 Nov. 2023

Furstenfeld, 47, is an inveterate rock fan, who grew up a devotee of Peter Gabriel, Morrissey and Jane's Addiction.

"Gabriel is who I want to be like," Furstenfeld said. "Gabriel is a wordsmith, who paints amazing sonic pictures. That's what I always wanted to do with Blue October.

"What I like about Morrissey and the Smiths and Jane's Addiction is that they all can go from very hard to very soft just like that. I like that variety. That's part of what has kept this band alive for so long."...

...Furstenfeld is lucid, energetic and inspired at mid-life. "I'm in a good place and I'm trying to do what my heroes have done, like Morrissey, which is to write about obscure things and make them beautiful."

Never cared much for Peter Gabriel’s vocal style, it sounds like yelling to me. Bono is another one. + are Octobers ever blue?

Yes, it's Morrissey all right.

His favorite influences are pretty great - Jane's Addiction, Smiths/Moz and Peter Gabriel.

Though, in my opinion, Porno For Pyros was better than Jane's, song for song.

Ah no sorry, you are wrong on your evaluation of Jane's vs Porno ;)

:D

1st Porno record - completely amazing! I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is reading this right now. It's called Porno For Pyros, and you'll be singing along. Groovy, funky, outstanding (and innovative) guitars and bass, and Perry was sharp. That lineup was incredible. The second (and final) record was so-so, but features a few high marks for the band. First LP though --- LOADED with high marks. It's like 90 to 100 percent high marks. One of the best debut LPs ever! Right up there with The Doors. And I never joke about my man, Ray Manzarek. ;)

The best Jane's release pre-2000s was the Triple X Live album (simply called Jane's Addiction), their first release. If somebody wanted to 'get' Jane's, I would play them that live LP - there's no better example I think. Also, Jane's wrote all of their songs (minus just a few) between 1985-1987. All the songs on Ritual (may be wrong about one) were written 3 years before it was released. I don't know what kind of 'immediate future' new musical output we would've gotten out of Jane's in the early 90s, as it seemed like Perry wanted to start moving in a more 'worldly' sound direction, and the group was essentially fading from drugs and exhaustion.

They are both great American bands.
