Queen's square like several of those squares around Bloomsbury were very active cruising grounds in the 80s and 90s for gay men. At night Russell Square was packed with men picking other men up. The police cottoned on to this at some point in the early 90s and regularly entered the park with vans arresting people and it was a losing battle so they installed huge spot lights on top of the building in the square that floodlighted the whole square all night. People moved to other nearby squares such as Queen Square. That whole area was a popular area for gay people to live and had Gay's The Word bookshop etc. Trafalgar square was the key focal point for every gay pride march at that time too. But these are obviously loose connections and who knows really what he is talking about. The problem when a lyricist starts to write a book is that he continues to write as though he is writing song lyrics which can be designed to have many meanings, hidden meanings, vague meanings, multiple meanings but it doesn't work well in what is supposed to be factual literature because because just dont know what he's talking about which defeats the whole point of the book. All adds to the mystery that he is responsible for and why there is a thread this long discussing this subject.
Take a couple of other people at random. Jarvis, he has always been an open person regarding his sexual attraction to women and if you ever see him on stage he comes across as a very sexually liberated individual with nothing to hide about what he likes. He has had some high profile relationships that have never been hidden and everyone knows everything or at least no one is not that interested in it because he isnt hiding anything or being secretive or coy about anything. No one has discussions about his sexuality or his private life.
Then another on, Robbie Williams. He was a bit of a wild child in his early and mid career. He was having many liaisons with many people , men and women. But he stated quite openly that he liked men and women and he gave that air of I dont give a shit what people think. The result of that meant that no one really dug for dirt that much. No one from all those liaisons spilt the beans and the media weren't really interested.
But when someone creates a air of mystery and comes out with words like humosexual and celibacy, and hating sex etc etc then the media and everyone else want to know why and they try to dig and you end up with people talking about it constantly. No doubt one day I suspect the beans will be spilt when someone wants some cash or develops a dislike of the man but in the meantime he will continue to fear walking around soho, continue trying to be mysterious as though it is interesting etc etc
I mean for most of us it is pretty obvious really. His art on sleeves , on stage etc etc have that quite typical gay connection that someone would have to be blind to not see it. I mean I cant think of a straight or even bisexual artist who would put a huge photo of a sailor as their stage backdrop or pictures of other male actors such as Richard Burton etc or a picture of a naked gay porn star on a single. There is subtle gaydar and then there is in your face pretty f***ing obvious gaydar.
